Staying Grounded And Present

Happy new year everyone!

Like many of us, I think a big part of evolving on our path involves looking back and taking stock of our last year. And it’s usually easy for me to do because I’ve always had a strong memory.

For example, if friends or family are relaying a memory and I happened to be there, I’ll see it like a movie in my mind. If they struggle to recall a small detail of the story, I’ll often chime in with it immediately:

“Remember you were wearing that cable knit red sweater and I was sitting to your left? We were at that breakfast place on 72nd street with the comfy purple booths, and everyone ordered the pumpkin spice french toast special which was awful.”

Ironically, this ability to remember rarely helped me in school. Heaven forbid I recall my multiplication tables during a test! But I do clearly remember the color of my math teacher’s car, her favorite beaded necklace and the fact that she was allergic to peanuts.

Conjuring up random details of an experience has always been a quirky part of my life.

And yet for the life of me, the details of this year are foggy.

As David and I were preparing fun things we wanted to cook over the holidays, he asked me what we made for last New Year’s Eve dinner. “Was it the miso ramen with steamed fish?”

What would normally be a rapid answer for me, was this time met with a total blank screen.

“I…have absolutely no idea?”

What did we even do? Did we watch a movie? We must have stayed home. Were we at our house? I ran through various questions, and I honestly couldn’t remember.

I decided to scan back further. What did we do for Christmas? Hannukah, Thanksgiving?

Each marker day was foggy, and very unlike me.

As I reflect upon the last year, I sometimes forget that it was more intense than maybe I gave myself permission to acknowledge.

What I do know is that when my memory is foggy, it’s one of the major signs of being ungrounded. This is because when things feel stressful or uncertain, a natural reaction is to just “keep my head down” and focus on something like work or a home project.

And while this does help to block out external noise, it makes it harder to stay present.

Which is why I’ve decided that my theme for 2022 is to be conscious of staying grounded.

As an aura intuitive, I often use color as an easy way to change my energy in positive ways. And orange energy is one of the main colors that I turn to when I need more grounding.

And the best part of color energy is that it’s super simple to use! To invoke some balancing orange energy for yourself, close your eyes and visualize it for a few minutes. You can also wear orange clothing or surround yourself with orange items. Each time you look at them, you’re getting a dose of balancing orange energy.

Being grounded is helpful in every aspect of life. Being grounded and mindful connects us to health, prosperity, self-care and relationships.

My goal is to regularly check in with myself and ask the simple question: “am I grounded right now?”

Am I grounded into this moment, feeling, situation etc…?

This is also part of why I created Your Year In Color, which starts on January 3rd! Every first Monday of the month we pause and ground into our energy to stay present. We reset with a new color and intention for the month.

I love the New Year, because it’s an opportunity for a fresh start. It’s an opportunity to reassess who and where we are on our path.

But this doesn’t just have to be on January first. Staying present can be every day, week or whenever you need it.

Check in with yourself. Re-group. Get grounded. And remember that we can always reset our energy.
