Money Beliefs

Awhile back I was coaching a client over the phone who came to me with a very specific issue in their life.

Clark (name changed for privacy) was enthusiastic, charming and one of those clients who I could just tell was ready to dig deep.

During a coaching package I always start with the same question:

“So, what would you like to work on during our time together?” I asked.

“I really want to work on my prosperity issues.”

As an intuitive coach, I will often physically feel what my clients are going through in my body. For example, if someone has the kind of anxiety that causes a stomachache, I will feel it in my own stomach as they speak.

Clark sounded upbeat during his session and was making a modest living as a real estate agent. But as soon as he brought up the topic of money, I could feel the underlying buzz of anxiety.

If a client has racing thoughts, suddenly I’ll feel my own thoughts become scattered. From this point I usually visualize a family tree in my mind, to help spot where the root of these issues may be coming from.

When I focused on Clark’s family tree, his mom started lighting up like a Christmas tree. This is a sign from my intuition that his money issues likely came from his mom.

Clark listed several memories of his mother being quite anxious about money, due to being a single mom who struggled to find work when Clark was very young.

He recalled many phrases like:

  • I can’t make ends meet
  • That place isn’t for us
  • We would have to be wealthy to shop there

Although things soon improved when his mom found a steady job, these early memories really stuck with Clark.

They floated in the back of his mind, even though he was now an adult who didn’t have the same struggles.

“Clark, close your eyes for a moment.” I asked.

“If you felt truly financially comfortable, I want you to think of an activity you would engage in that would allow you to feel abundant.”

“I would buy my work clothes at Bloomingdales,” he replied almost immediately. He then said that he never allowed himself to shop there out of the assumption that he couldn’t afford it.

This was such a perfect answer.

Clark worked hard and wanted to reward himself with something nice. But as a child in a family on a strict budget, the idea of shopping in what was considered an “upscale” store was never an option.

I decided that for his first week’s coaching homework, he was going to go to Bloomingdale’s and find one thing he could purchase.

I explained that it could be anything. Socks, a handkerchief, underwear – it wasn’t really about buying something extravagant, but about allowing himself to have an experience that felt abundant.

I also wanted him to wear something blue.

As an aura intuitive, when I see blue in someone’s aura, I know that they are a truth-seeker and ready to gain wisdom. By visualizing blue in meditation and wearing the color, I wanted him to raise the energy of truth within himself. I wanted him to see where he might be letting fear get in the way of enjoying his own abundance.

The following week during our session, Clark excitedly talked about his shopping experience. He was surprised to find several items that were reasonably priced, and more importantly realized that the experience itself left him feeling more abundant.

But the discussion went deeper than that. He realized that he felt on some level, as if buying something nice for himself would betray the challenges that his mom went through. His brain subconsciously connected fear of money as a form of loyalty to his mom.

The mere thought of shopping at one store triggered all of those old tapes:

  • I can’t afford that
  • That place isn’t for me

We all have moments where our brain creates an illusion based on fear or an old belief. It’s not intentional and can block us from the movement of new energy and abundance.

It may seem simple to walk into a store and purchase one item – but at its core we are initiating deeper work.

This simple exercise gave Clark permission to feel abundant and prosperous in a practical way. It also led to deeper examination of his relationship with beliefs about abundance and scarcity.

It might be interesting to ask yourself what you would do if you felt financially free?

Once you pick something, ask yourself how you could reframe it into something you can do today?

Is there is an experience you’d like to have but feel like it’s out of your grasp?

How could you find a reasonable way to have the experience?

Observing our limiting thoughts and then reframing by finding a way to challenge them is a powerful step in moving into a state of peace.

Try using the color blue and allow it to highlight a fear or illusion that may exist in your mind.

Once you identify the limiting belief, try and think of a simple exercise to help you have the experience that your subconscious has been telling you is out of your reach.

Much Love,

P.S. Join me later this month when I’ll be co-teaching a master class called The Aura of Money! We are going to dig deep into releasing fears, letting go of old beliefs, and opening ourselves to receiving more abundance. I’d love to see you there, so make sure to save your spot!

  1. I have already signed up for this class and am looking forward to learning how to break free from thoughts and beliefs that are holding me back from the abundance that I desire.

  2. This is so interesting! I have a limiting belief around money from my mother, too: that rich people are “bad” people (raised by a single mother on welfare like “Clark”.). I know it to be false, intellectually, and yet I’ve had no luck so far shifting the subconscious belief.
