A Spiritual Adventure of Beauty, Culture, and Connection

Over the course of our journey, you’ll experience the joy of traveling with a warm and supportive community of fellow seekers from both the United States and Japan.
Each day will weave together moments of cultural wonder and spiritual practice, from exploring beautiful cities together, to visiting holy sites where prayer and stillness deepen our connection to spirit.
“Traveling to Japan with such a beautiful and supportive group was a blessing. The experience was breathtaking, magical, and transformative.”

Why Journey to Japan Is More Than a Trip
Japan is a land of contrasts…where sleek, modern cities hum with life alongside ancient temples that breathe quiet stillness.
Lantern-lit paths and serene shrines invite you to experience Japan not just as a destination, but as a harmony of both cultural wonder and spiritual renewal.
Meet Your Hosts
At the heart of Journey to Japan are your hosts, psychic intuitive and author Dougall Fraser and his husband and manager, David Harel.
Dougall has been guiding people for nearly three decades through his unique teachings on color, intuition, and spiritual growth. His warm, down-to-earth approach helps participants connect with their higher selves while navigating life with clarity and purpose.
David brings his creative spark, organizational talent, and passion for spirituality to every detail of the journey.
From logistics to leadership, he ensures that each participant feels cared for, welcomed, and supported.
Together, Dougall and David have crafted this retreat as a balance of spiritual discovery and cultural immersion.
With their guidance, you’ll not only explore some of Japan’s most beautiful sites but also deepen your connection to yourself and to the community of fellow travelers.
Over seven days you'll:
- Ride the shinkansen bullet train through the Japanese countryside
- Wander Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya district, a preserved geisha quarter with quaint wooden teahouses and narrow alleys
- Visit Shirayama Hime Shrine, one of the most revered Shinto shrines in Japan
- Explore Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village nestled in the mountains
- Savor the artistry of Japanese cuisine from gold-leaf sweets and the freshest sushi to carefully crafted traditional meals
- Unwind in an outdoor natural hot spring overlooking the Pacific Ocean
- Share meals and circles of connection with fellow travelers
A Bridge Between Cultures
One of the most meaningful parts of this experience is the opportunity to connect with both American and Japanese participants. Dougall has been hosting events in Japan for over ten years, cultivating a vibrant community of kind-hearted, spiritually open individuals.
Through this shared journey, you’ll not only explore Japan’s beauty. You’ll also have the chance to form friendships that transcend language and culture. Many of our Japanese participants are eager to meet guests from the United States, to share their traditions, and to learn about your life and experiences in return.
Whether you’re chatting over a meal, visiting a temple together, or simply sharing quiet moments during the retreat, you’ll feel the joy of human connection that unites us all.

From there, we’ll personally assist you in getting to the hotel (whether by train or taxi) so you can relax knowing every detail is cared for.
If you choose to arrive separately, we’ll provide clear directions and support so you can easily meet us at the hotel.
Once you’ve arrived at the hotel, you’ll have plenty of time to rest up before we start the following morning.
May 14: Kinomiya Shrine and Atami Hot Springs
Daytime: We’ll take a day trip to Atami, where you can feel the healing energy of Kinomiya Shrine and its majestic, 2,000 year old camphor tree. Enjoy a seaside lunch, and travel aboard the luxurious Saphir Odoriko train with breathtaking coastal views.
Optional but included: Soak in open-air natural hot springs overlooking the ocean, letting the warm water and sweeping views restore your spirit.
Evening: After returning from our day trip, the evening is yours to enjoy as you wish.
Savor a quiet dinner, stroll through Tokyo’s vibrant neighborhoods, or simply relax and integrate the day’s experiences.
May 15: Tokyo Collaboration Event
Enjoy a special collaboration event featuring Dougall Fraser and Yoshikazu Namiki-san, one of Japan’s most respected intuitives and spiritual teachers.
Together they’ll share insights, stories, and intuitive messages designed to inspire and uplift both Japanese and international participants.
This unique gathering will include a shared meal experience, creating time for meaningful conversation and connection in a relaxed, joyful setting.
May 16: Travel to Kanazawa
This morning we board the shinkansen bullet train to Kanazawa, gliding through the Japanese countryside at incredible speed. We’ll enjoy a light breakfast in the comfort of spacious seating, as beautiful views sail by the windows.
This is more than transportation, it’s a uniquely Japanese experience that makes the journey itself feel special.
After leaving our luggage at the hotel, we’ll head to the Higashi Chaya district, a beautifully preserved geisha and teahouse quarter filled with winding streets, traditional wooden buildings, and golden touches that Kanazawa is famous for.
In this area, we’ll enjoy a group tea and Q&A, blending nourishment of body and spirit. This will take place at Sabō Yanagi-an, a shop and cafe renowned for its exquisite use of gold leaf and sweets. Dougall will guide a special exercise designed to uplift your energy, awaken creativity, and connect you with the radiant light within.
May 17: Kanazawa Retreat
We’ll start off with a delicious western-style breakfast at our hotel. Together we’ll visit Shirayama Hime Shrine, one of the most important sacred sites in the region.
After joining in meditative prayer, we’ll have free time to explore the grounds which includes many smaller surrounding shrines.
Afterward, we’ll gather for lunch at Kamameshiya, where we’ll savor traditional kettle-cooked rice with fish and vegetables.
We’ll then visit Kinkengu Shrine, celebrated as one of Japan’s three great shrines for financial fortune and prosperity. Here, you’ll have time to offer prayers or simply soak in the uplifting energy of this powerful site before returning to Kanazawa for a relaxed afternoon and evening.
Back in Kanazawa, you may wish to visit Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens, or simply enjoy free time as you wish.
May 18: Shirakawa-go
After breakfast, we’ll set off for Shirakawa-go, a mountain village designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its traditional gasshō-style thatched-roof houses. These are architectural masterpieces that seem lifted from a fairytale.
We’ll stroll through this picturesque village, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and timeless craftsmanship that has preserved it for generations. Lunch will feature a Hida beef set meal, a regional specialty known for its tenderness and rich flavor.
Following lunch, we’ll visit the Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observatory for sweeping panoramic views of the valley, before stopping at the Shirakawa-go station to browse local crafts and souvenirs.
We’ll then return to Kanazawa for a relaxed afternoon and evening, a perfect time to reflect on the beauty and serenity of our final full day together.
May 19: Return To Tokyo & Conclude Event
After a final breakfast together, we’ll check out of our hotel and head to Kanazawa Station, where you’ll have a little free time for last-minute souvenir shopping and to soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful city one more time.
From there, we’ll travel by shinkansen back to Tokyo, accompanied by a member of the Dougall Fraser Japan team who will ensure a smooth and easy return to Haneda Airport.
For those who wish to extend their stay, you’re welcome to continue your travels independently. It’s a great opportunity to explore more of Japan’s wonders at your own pace.
As our journey together comes to a close, we part ways with full hearts, renewed energy, and memories that will last a lifetime.

You’re absolutely welcome to come early or stay later to extend your trip! We personally recommend staying later rather than coming early. The reason for this is that if you come on the recommended flight, our team will meet you at the airport to greet you and help you get oriented. By the end of our tour, you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and be prepared for wherever you choose to go next.
Although Japan is very accommodating for all different activity levels, it’s important to note that we will be doing a lot of walking during this tour. You will easily take about 10,000 steps a day, so comfortable walking shoes are important! If you have concerns or special considerations, feel free to reach out and we’ll be happy to help.
Not at all! Guides and translators will be on the trip with us.
Several past participants were first-time passport holders and felt completely supported. This is a great opportunity to venture out and experience a new destination!
No, but we do provide recommended hotels and guidance for flights. If you use our suggestions, you’ll be traveling with the group!
